Songwriting Tips – 7 Tips For Better Songwriting
By Kyle H

Before reading these songwriting tips you must first realize that every songwriter has different techniques and methods when attempting to write a hit song but here are a few basic “guidelines” or key tips to consider to get you started.

Songwriting Tip #1 – Analyze Popular Music:

Listen to some of your favorite songs and ask yourself what it is that makes these particular songs appealing to your ears. Do these songs contain many wordy lyrics, or are the lyrics relatively simplistic yet effective? What gives the song its “catchy” value?

You should study songs made by popular artists that never became popular. Ask yourself why that particular song failed and learn from what they did wrong.

Songwriting Tip #2 – The Idea:
It all starts with an idea, whether it be an song concept or a melody. If you have a song title or concept in mind, first brainstorm and make a list of words that relate to your song. Use these words throughout your song in order to remain consistent to your theme.

If you first come up with a melody, you should then brainstorm a list of song themes that come to mind when listening to your melody. What kind of feeling does your melody generate? Does your melody sound “happy”? In this case you may want to think of themes of a similar feel-good nature.

Songwriting Tip #3 – Structure:
When writing a song it is a good idea to keep in mind the structure or format of the song. Ask yourself how many verses there should be. A typical and popular songwriting structure is as follows: Intro, Verse, Chorus (hook), Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus, Outro.

Many songs also include a pre-chorus after each versus and prior to the chorus. Your melody or concept should dictate the song structure you choose. You should also consider the length of your song. Most popular songs are typically 4 minutes and 30 seconds.

Songwriting Tip #4 – Get The Listener Involved:
Through my experience of listening and writing music the songs that I enjoy the most are typically the songs that I can relate to in some way. When it comes to music people tend to have a short listening-span. Make sure you start your song off with a powerful line or a catchy melody to gain the listeners interest.

Songwriting Tip #5: Focus On The Chorus:

This is a key songwriting tip many new songwriters overlook. Think of the most popular songs in history and which part of the song generally comes to mind first. The chorus is, in some cases, the most important element of a song.

Your chorus should be catchy, simplistic, and memorable. You want your audience to easily sing along and remember your chorus so you shouldn’t include many large words or long phrases in your chorus.

Songwriting Tip #6:  The Beat (Instrumental):

The beat you chose for your song should be equally as catchy. Look for pop-sounding beats that have a broad or “crossover” appeal in which everyone will enjoy. Determine the tempo of your song. Whether it will be high or mid-tempo and dance related or a song with a slow tempo.

Songwriting Tip #7:  Get Feedback:
Sometimes it is important to get feedback for your song from another perspective. Ask your family or friends what they think of your song. Ask for their suggestions and take their opinions into consideration.

Keep these songwriting tips in mind when writing your next song. They are tried and true methods that will assuredly help you!
